March 10/3/07 Round 1QualifyingI had previously to my disappointment did a time at Willowbank, a time of 1:06 - 1:07 on my Moriwaki 80cc. However qualifying at round one of the series i produced a 1:04 which put me into 6th position, second row on the grid right in between two 150cc four stroke Honda riders. I was wrapped.
Race 1I was very nervous for my very first race of the year. Here i was sitting on the second row of the grid anxiously waiting for the red lights to go out. My start off the grid wasn't too bad although i did tend to dump the clutch which bogged me down a little. I went into the first corner sitting in equal sixth position. I was pretty please with my effort not to have lost a spot. In the next few laps i was battle for fifth position with a 150cc rider. I finally won that battle on the second last lap. I subsequently took out fifth for that race doing a 1:03 which was only a little over 600th of a second slower than the second place getter of the 150cc Honda riders. I placed third overall in that race for my 80cc class.
Race 2I wasn't so nervous for my second race which showed in my start on the restart as one of the boys had a big high side which omitted them from the rest of the evenings racing. I went straight into second position off the starting grid which was fantastic.I subsequently was over taken into turn two by a 150cc rider. I sat in third position hanging on as close as i could to the lead riders with yet another 150cc crawling all over my back wheel. I took one of the slowest corners too tightly and too hot just to have my front wheel slide out from underneath me; by the time i got the bike back up and unable to select gears properly the last place getter was already a quarter of a lap in front of me. One thing i hate is being last so i did the best i could with a gear lever with a mind of its own to regain the field and over taking the last place getter. But unfortunately for that 150cc rider too had a slide out which then left me with getting last in that race finishing 10th out of 12. My best time for that race was a 1:04 which wasn't too bad. For the 80cc class i took out 4th overall.
Race 3Once again in this race my start wasn't too good i dumped too much clutch again. I was certain not to do that again for the next two races left of the evening. However in the start my fellow class rider was unfortunately for him but fortunately for me was nabbed for jumping the start which gave me a win for my class in this race. I guess thats racing. I finished sixth overall with only two of the 150cc riders finishing behind me but had i had a couple of more laps i would have past yet another 150cc rider as i was all over his back wheel. I guess in the back of my mind i didn't want to make another mistake and have another slide out; which put me in the line of thinking of a finish is a good finish; and a good finish it was, my first win yeah!
Race 4My start was a little better but i didn't get the start i really wanted. I kept as close as i could to the 150cc rider in front of me but i couldn't find away around him. This race was uneventful ( a few passes and re-passes) as where everyone sat into the first corner was how we all finished; which i guess was good for all the mums and dads that were there to watch. I did the fifth fastest time of 1:03 again out of 11 riders, however i did finish seventh overall which was disappointing and second place for my class
Final This was the race i knew that if i hung on i would get second overall for the evening for my class. I had the best start of the evening,it was great no bogging down a nice ease out of the clutch. I found myself battling for fifth position again with a 150cc rider but he was on to me and didn't make any mistakes that would have let me through for fifth so i had to settle with a sixth placing overall. I produced another consistent 1:03 again for the evening.
OverviewI was consistent with my times for the night which i believed got me second overall for the night. I know i can improve my times and will endeavor to do. Even though it was my first ever race and haven't ridden for long, i know i can do even better and can mix it with the boys who have raced before and those who have ridden for longer.
